Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT) for Individuals & Families with ADHD
What is Solution-Focused Therapy?
It’s goal-oriented and solutions-focused; this means it doesn’t dwell on problems. Instead, it takes a quick look at what’s getting in our way and comes up with ideas or experiments to try on that can help shift what is causing stress.
Why can this be helpful for ADHD?
People with ADHD tend to get bored easily and value novelty and momentum. SFT offers this!
It’s broken down into chunks or doable tasks that can help motivation stay at a helpful level while also taking one step at a time to practice new skills.
It’s also offered in a structured way at Vengris Counselling Collective which is a helpful way to work with a brain that is neurodivergent (less opportunity to get lost in the details or mundane processes).
Lastly, it is time limited and brief in nature. This means it tends to be around 5-8 sessions. Time limited also helps people with ADHD have a clear sense of what to expect and can help with the motivation to carry through on a goal because there is an end in sight.
Why can this be helpful for families with ADHD?
It helps create a feeling of Us Against the Problem in a family (instead of being about changing one person or one person’s difficulties). Everyone has a say and is involved in coming up with new ways of approaching a problem getting in the family’s way. It can also help a family better understand how to support a child or parent who has ADHD best OR help them all understand each other’s neurodivergence (…remember that ADHD has a genetic component so it’s not uncommon to see two people in a family unit who have it).
Why can this be helpful for Women with ADHD?
Women who have a diagnosis of ADHD often receive it later in life. This means many women have been misdiagnosed with mood disorders like anxiety and depression and have tried therapy for said diagnoses. This therapy can only go so far in being helpful because it is often unable to address the underlying cause of the mood difficulty and ends up accidentally reinforcing a sense of shame and otherness.
SFT can help women in this scenario to feel a sense of momentum and accomplishment after years of masking and burnout. It can help them feel they understand their own unique brain better and how to support it in the best way possible (instead of it being viewed as flawed and something to be fixed).
Does Vengris Counselling Collective offer SFBT to men as well?
Yes! Of course; we have the expertise to support men as well. If you have ADHD, we can support you. We have supported many men individually or within families.
